When I first picked up Jason Fagone’s The Woman Who Smashed Codes, I expected a fascinating story—but what I found was so much more. This book is a deeply human and inspiring portrait of Elizebeth Smith Friedman, a woman who helped shaped the field of cryptology and played an unsung but critical role in American intelligence history. 

Elizebeth’s journey began in the most unexpected way: as a young Shakespeare scholar working on an eccentric millionaire’s project to decode supposed hidden messages in literary works. It’s the kind of origin story that feels like fiction but is entirely real. Her innate brilliance and curiosity launched her into the world of code-breaking, where she teamed up with William Friedman, her future husband and partner in innovation. 

Together, the Friedmans laid the groundwork for modern cryptology. Elizebeth’s contributions ranged from taking down smuggling networks during Prohibition to exposing Nazi spy rings in South America during World War II. She even cracked multiple versions of the infamous Enigma machine.
